Could you imagine having a top college coach stop by your basketball games during your college recruiting process? It’s not completely unrealistic but it’s important to understand how recruiting works for basketball and the steps you need to take to make hundreds of coaches interested in you. It’s important to understand that top college basketball programs all know about the top 100 or so players in the nation and actively recruit these prospects. However, there are players who slip the cracks because they know how to put their face in front of these coaches and make the most of it. The problem is most high school basketball players think these coaches won’t be interested in them at all so they don’t even bother. While this is probably correct 95% of the time it’s taking the chance to put yourself out there because the truth is you really don’t know the “needs” of every team. You might be exactly what they’re looking for. Maybe you are a great three point shooter and shows a tremendous basketball savvy. You might be surprised at the demand you could generate with a little self promotion. That’s what it’s all about, self promoting for basketball college recruiting. Getting your name out there in front of the coach or coaches from all the schools you’re interested in and letting them know you, type of player you are, where you’ll be playing in summer AAU, etc. For instance, lets say you send out 50 letters promoting yourself to coaches across the country about 2 to 3 months before the college basketball recruiting period begins. In most cases you’ll receive a letter back in the mail thanking you for your interest and they will keep your name on a list of players to check out if your schedules coincide. You might receive a response of 10% which means you’ll get 5 coaches at schools you’re interested in showing up to watch you during summer basketball. You could see an even better response and maybe half of them keep your name on their list of players to check out. The overall key is promoting yourself and putting your name in front of everyone and don’t limit yourself. If anything it’s awesome just to say you received letters in the mail from a North Carolina, Kentucky or a Florida and maybe if you’re lucky you’ll catch an assistant or head coach checking you out for 5 to 10 minutes during a summer league game. That should be your goal and if have a great half then who knows what can happen. This is one of the best approaches to take for basketball and college recruiting if you’re serious about it.
